Historically significant, the Santos was the first wristwatch ever designed for men in 1904. It was originally affixed to a leather strap and had some key design features which still remain until this day. The Santos was reimagined by La Maison in the 1980s as a thoroughly modern Cartier. It was introduced in a more rugged style with a metal bracelet, and subsequently became the ultimate status symbol of wealth, lifestyle and success. The modern Santos follows this design philosophy, using larger cases, sportier designs, and an automatic movement. This reference 2823 is the rare XL range which sports a larger 32mm by 45mm case – perfect for those who like the style but still feel the need for a modern case size.

On the wrist it is unmistakably Cartier, it has the distinguished ‘screw’ accents on both the bezel and the links, characteristic case and integrated bracelet design, Roman Numeral hour markers, blued hands and matching cabochon encrusted crown. This example also has a workhorse automatic Cartier signed movement and a scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass. The concealed clasp is also a popular feature which makes the Santos bracelet feel as comfortable as jewellery on the wrist. While Cartier have released a wide range of Santos models, this reference 2823 commands the highest premium due to the desirability of its case size. It is the largest Santos Galbee ever produced and is commonly referred to as the ‘XL’ thanks to case measurements of 32mm x 45mm which offer a bold wrist presence. The current iterations of the Santos don’t have the same ‘sweet spot’ case profile as this one, being too large or too thin.

As for the condition, it is excellent as per the photographs, showing very few signs of wear. I have checked the timekeeping over 24 hours, the crown is responsive, the bracelet tight, while the clasp fastens securely. It has just been routinely serviced and as such all functions are working perfectly. Along with the watch itself comes a plain presentation box, an invoice for your purchase with a certificate showing the serial has a clean history.
